Disambiguating lexical markers of cause and effect using actantial structures and actant classes
نویسنده
چکیده
The aim of this project was to develop and evaluate a method for the disambiguation of English lexical knowledge patterns that can be used to identify cause-effect relations. Recently, terminologists and computer scientists have investigated various techniques for locating informative contexts in specialized corpora automatically or semiautomatically. Some of these methods rely partly or exclusively on linguistic patterns that express a specific relationship (genericspecific, part-whole, entity-function, cause-effect, etc.). Some patterns are efficient, while others are highly ambiguous, leading to poorer results. The method we developed focuses on the actantial structures of lexical units in patterns and the semantic classes of terms linked by these patterns (with the attribution of classes relying partly on external resources). The experiment was carried out on a corpus of English medical texts. Our results show that this approach is promising, but also that other strategies need to be implemented in order to disambiguate patterns completely. 1 The authors wish to thank Sylvie Vandaele and Alain Polguère for their valuable insight and assistance, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Université de Montréal for their generous support. We would also like to thank the colleagues who commented on various aspects of the project as presented at the LSP conference and an OLST-RALI seminar.

A Methodology for Developing Multilingual Resources for Terminology
This paper presents a project that aims at building lexical resources for terminology. By lexical resources, we mean dictionaries that provide detailed lexico-semantic information on terms, i.e. lexical units the sense of which can be related to a special subject field. In terminology, there is a lack of such resources. The specific dictionaries we are currently developing describe basic French...
متن کاملCapturing syntactico-semantic regularities among terms: An application of the FrameNet methodology to terminology
Terminological databases do not always provide detailed information on the linguistic behaviour of terms, although this is important for potential users such as translators or students. In this paper we describe a project that aims to fill this gap by proposing a method for annotating terms in sentences based on that developed within the FrameNet project (Ruppenhofer et al. 2010) and by impleme...
متن کاملThe Effect of Reducing Lexical and Syntactic Complexity of Texts on Reading Comprehension
The present study investigated the effect of different types of text simplification (i.e., reducing the lexical and syntactic complexity of texts) on reading comprehension of English as a Foreign Language learners (EFL). Sixty female intermediate EFL learners from three intact classes in Tabarestan Language Institute in Tehran participated in the study. The intact classes were assigned to three...
متن کاملOn the Role of Derivational Processes in the Formation of Non-Taxonomic Classes of Lexical Units in Russian
The paper is focused on classes of lexical units which arise as a result of derivational processes – word formation and semantic transfers, acting either in isolation or together, on the basis of common semantic foundations that bind targets and sources of derivation. The lexical items which constitute the classes under study vary in their denotative characteristics and due to their categ...
متن کاملOn the Predicate-Argument Structure: Internal and Absorbing Scope
Valency filling is considered a major mechanism for constructing the semantic structure of the sentence from semantic structures of words. This approach requires a broader view of valency and actant, covering all kinds of actant-bearing words and all types of valency filling. We introduce the concept of scope as a generalization of actant: it is any fragment of a Syntactic (SyntScope) or Semant...
